AFFIRMATION, REPUDIATION, and EDIFICATION
Happy Valentines Day! On February 14, 2006 Harding will be hosting Jose Maria Anzar, President of Spain from 1996 to 2004, instead of Ann Coulter. In an act affirming the highest ethic of Christians--love--and repudiating Ann Coulter's vitriol, though of course, not her conservatism, Harding selected a known statesman.

Now, I will write Dr. Burks a letter saying thanks for listening.

Dr. Burks obviously did the right thing. It was also obvious from the newspaper article that the college didn't want to ruffle certain supporters' feathers. The quote from the school's PR persn saying that, "We have not criticized her conservative philosophy," is unfortunate. Why was she ever invited to Harding in the first place? Somebody obviously thought she was a good choice. How sad.

Hey Aunt Bev,
I've read this over and over and I'm kind of a smart person and I was wondering if you meant to say February instead of July... or if maybe I just didnt get the deeper, greater meaning of such a prolific writer?
always,
Joshua

YIKES. What a glaring error I made! I typed July instead of February and I have no idea why! I corrected it, but am sorry for being befuddling

Bev & MANY,MANY,MANY others writing in made the Administration reverse the Ann Coulter invite. I've always felt that if people would respond EN MASSE, things would change--and that is what happened here! The only thing I will say in defense of HU is that PEPPERDINE had her last year! Who woulda thunk that?!

Well, that's not entirely true. In 2001 or 2002, the college Republicans invited Ann Coulter here. She spoke to a crowd of about 50 students and didn't receive an honorarium. Pepperdine didn't make any PR mention of her visit because (sources tell me) her appearance really angered the administration here...but, the administration here usually doesn't shut down student organizations.

So, perhaps I'm biased, but the differences between the two are fairly distinct.

Malibu Librarian, Thanks for setting me straight on Ann Coulter's Pepperdine visit. I still am glad that she has been uninvited to HU.
